Today we get a look into the mysterious death of Elisa Lam who went missing on January 31, 2013. You may remember the news reports of the 21-year-old Canadian student at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver whose body was known to be found weeks later inside a water tank atop the Cecil Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles on February 19, 2013. So, she went missing on January 31, and her body was reportedly found February 19. Maintenance workers at the Cecil Hotel discovered the body when investigating complaints from guests about the low water pressure. On February 21, two days after her body was found, the coroner’s office reported that they had found her death to be an accidental drowning, with bipolar disorder as a significant factor. The news of her disappearance was reported world wide and interest increased a week before her body’s discovery when the LAPD released a 4 minute video recovered from an elevator security camera showing a person known to be Elisa Lam behaving very strangely. The elevator video was posted to many sources online and view counts are in the tens of millions. However, the video is an artifact in itself with an indiscernible time stamp and some also claim the video speed is altered. There is still very little information regarding the circumstances of Elisa Lam’s death. There are many unresolved issues, loose ends, unexplainable coincidences, and odd connections. For example, the unusual similarity to the 2005 film Dark Water a remake of the 2002 Japanese film by the same name. The 2002 film includes a problematic elevator and discolored water that gushes from the building’s faucets and that eventually leads to the discovery of a young girl drowned in building’s water tank. There are other films that were inspired by Lam’s case and a major one currently in production titled The Bringing by Sony Pictures.
